The Tanzania Ministry of Minerals organizes
the Mining and Investment Conference, aiming to share firsthand experiences
from various stakeholders regarding their activities and the connections
between different players in the mining and mineral value chain.
The conference also seeks to document the
government's commitment to practices, legal and institutional frameworks,
certification mechanisms, and the working relationships between governments,
chain of custody service providers, and companies involved in mining, mineral
processing, and export.
Among other objectives, the conference seeks to discuss and achieve a common understanding of the management of the mining sector and the maximization of its benefits.
The Tanzania Mining and Investment Conference
is an initiative designed to bring together stakeholders from the government,
the private sector, and specifically the mining industry to enhance market
demands and standards, raising the economic value of mining and mineral
activities in the country while promoting available investment opportunities.
The mining sector, particularly gold production, has been a major source of foreign exchange for Tanzania. In 2023, minerals worth USD 3.551 billion were exported, accounting for 56.2% of non-traditional exports, compared to USD 3.395 billion in 2022.
Tanzania's mining sector has consistently contributed significantly to the country's GDP. For instance, from 2018 to 2022, the sector's contribution grew from 4.8% to 9.1%. The government aims to increase the mining sector's contribution to 10% of GDP by 2025

Ahmed Alkhatib is a serial entrepreneur and a Silicon Valley veteran. Growing up and going to school in the San Francisco Bay Area, Ahmed was introduced to technology at an early age. At 18, he joined his first Startup while attending college. Ahmed focused his career on early stage startups working directly with investors, entrepreneurs and founders to plan, build and execute projects across various industries in the digital space. He’s worked and consulted for Amazon, Walmart, Sacks Fifth Avenue, Ebay, PayPal and many other premium Internet properties. In 2005, he joined Zazzle.com as director of IT infrastructure and operations and helped launch the company in 42 countries. Today Zazzle is the #1 customization platform in the world.
After a successful career in the Bay Area, Ahmed decided to move to Dubai to pursue an entrepreneurial journey. Ahmed founded MarkaVIP in November 2010, adapting the tried-andtested flash sales model to suit local consumers and retailers in the Middle East and North Africa. As the Founder and CEO, he was responsible for the overall strategic direction and management of the company. MarkaVIP grew to become the largest ecommerce platform in the MENA region. He raised over $100M dollars for the company and employed over 1000 people. A China based investment group acquired MarkaVIP.
After MarkaVIP and having spent 6 years understanding the challenges and barriers to doing business in developing markets, Ahmed founded Revton. Revton was setup as complete localization and ecom service platform for under developed ecommerce markets in MENA, Afirca, Russia and South East Aisa. The mission was to help international brands localize in their offering in their target region to reach consumers directly via ecommerce eliminating dependency on local agencies. Adidas global was Revton’s first client. Adidas relies on Revton to manage its ecommerce operations end to end in the MENA region and currently expanding into Turkey. This includes digital marketing, UX/UI localization, translation, inventory management, distribution, payment, last mile delivery and customer service.
With 18 years’ of experience and a network of 6000 brands and retailers across the world , Ahmed is a true international brand ambassador. A Professional Natural Scientist (Geological Sciences)
with SACNASP Registration number 400212/14 have 36 years’ of experience which
started briefly with STAMICO in 1988 before I was seconded to Placer Dome Inc.
In 1990. I subsequently moved to BHP Minerals in 1992, Ashanti in 1999; and
AngloGold Ashanti in 2004, where I gained skills in generating and management
of mineral exploration projects from grassroots to resource definition stages.
While I worked as exploration manager I maintained very good relationships
between the companies and respective government representatives and
engaged/involved fully in research projects on predictive metallogeny
(Madagascar, Tanzania and DRC), formal and field-related training of new
generation of geoscientists.
While with BHP in 1992, I managed regional exploration
for nickel sulphide deposits in Kagera Region, Tanzania, generated Cu-Au
opportunities in Malawi and assessed potential for Broken-Hill type Pb-Zn-Ag
deposits in Madagascar. While with Ashanti Goldfields in 1999, I outlined
~400,000 Oz Au from Kitongo Project, before switching to project generation
where my focus was to assess mineral resource endowment in belts traditionally
been believed un-prospective for significant gold deposit (Central-Eastern
Tanzania). Under the assistance of Prof. Mruma and supervision of Prof. David
Groves, these projects were later to be transformed into a PhD study that
demonstrated upside exploration and discovery potentials pertaining to
relatively thin greenstone belts in under-explored and un-explored greenstone
belts in the southeasterly LVR and across the Tanzanian Craton into the East
African Orogen (EAO). This work led to the discovery of the Handeni Gold
District, where two economic Au intercepts have been discovered from
Mkurumu/Negero, and ~1 MOz Au in resource at Magambazi. Small-scale orogenic
gold prospects including Mazoka and Kitunda Prospects, have been discovered in
CTR.
While with AGA in the DRC, I 1) established an
exploration team that provided the geological understanding upon which
subsequent exploration programs were carried out in the Kilo Concession,
eastern DRC; 2) assessed exploration opportunities from various mineral
provinces in continental Africa and Madagascar, including Uganda, Kenya,
Rwanda/Burundi, DRC, Gabon Cameroon, Mauritania, CAR, Southern Sudan,
Mozambique, Zambia, and Namibia); 3) continuously mentored young geologists,
some currently holding exploration management positions; 4) formed part of
senior peer review team for AGA’s greenfields exploration projects; and as way
of giving back to the country, I have published papers on Au, Pb-Zn-Ag mineralisation
and co-authored papers on magmatic sulphide-nickel sulphide deposits of NW
Tanzania. I have reviewed manuscripts submitted for publication from
international and national researchers. Since founding Mazoka Resources, I have
been part of the team which: 1) have reviewed and ranked mineral resources
pertaining to more than 10 projects on behalf of three different junior
exploration companies in Tanzania; 2)
are conducting local and international workshops short-courses for
government stakeholders directly and/or indirectly involved in the management
of of the mineral supply chain for development and future generations of
Tanzania
